Natural plant strengtheners explained

Organic plant tonics are a great way to help your plants grow stronger and healthier. But what exactly is the difference between them and fertilizers, and how can you make your own natural remedies? This article explains the effects of nettle manure, horsetail, and other natural remedies.

Effect of organic plant strengtheners

Plant tonics support health by promoting synergistic effects with plant-derived substances.

Plant tonics often consist of natural, secondary plant substances. They can be organically based, such as essential oils, or microbially based, such as fungi and promoting bacteria. Mineral plant tonics are also available, for example, with rock flour.

The use of plant strengtheners is more beneficial for young plants than for older plants, as these are particularly susceptible to diseases, etc. For cultivated plants, it's usually also worthwhile to simply apply non-supportive products shortly before harvest.

Difference between plant strengtheners and fertilizers

Plant tonics lack significant nutrient content and cannot cure diseased or infested plants. They act as a preventative against disease and insect pests, as well as other damaging events such as frost, heat, and drought, by making plants vital and robust.

Fertilizers are not plant strengtheners but belong to a different product group. Fertilization provides plants with essential nutrients for survival and is therefore indispensable in plant care.

Pesticides also belong to a different group. Pesticides actively combat pests and diseases, while tonics merely prevent them! Generally speaking, plant tonics are the least strictly regulated, if at all.

Make your own plant strengthener

Effective remedies for your plants are easy to make. You often have the necessary ingredients growing in your garden or along the roadside. The secondary plant substance silica can be extracted from plant material such as stinging nettle or horsetail. This helps strengthen cell walls and cell structures, making it an ideal tonic for plants both indoors and outdoors.

To make a slurry, fill a bucket three-quarters full with nettles and fill the rest with rainwater. Rock flour can be added to reduce the odor. The fermentation process then begins; the slurry is ready after the nettles have steeped for two weeks.

Broth from horsetail is easy to make by pouring boiling water over it and letting it steep for at least 24 hours.

Burdock root can also be boiled as a wonderful tonic, and tansy spoils the beetles' appetite!

Essential oils are suitable as a small aid for plants: the oils of chamomile and peppermint inhibit the growth and spread of fungal diseases.

Use natural plant tonics

Never use the strengthening preparation undiluted. Dilute the liquid manure and broth with a few liters of water: use a ratio of 1:10 for young plants and cuttings, and 1:20 for older plants.

You can either add the product to the watering water directly at the base of the plant or simply use it by spraying it onto the leaves.

What can nettle manure, horsetail, etc. do?

Plant strengtheners, whether purchased or homemade, are used preventively to prevent pests and diseases such as mildew, aphids, and fungi. Ingredients such as silica make plants more vital, thereby strengthening the plant's own defenses. They are not regulated by fertilizer law, as they contain hardly any Nutrients such as phosphorus and trace elements. However, they contribute to keeping all parts of the plant healthy; it's a plant aid, so to speak. Therefore, preparations for strengthening houseplants and garden plants can be effectively combined with fertilizers and, if necessary, pesticides!
