Basil ( Ocimum basilicum ) belongs to the mint family and originally comes from north-west India. It is one of the most popular herbs and can be found in many home gardens or on the windowsill of apartments. Basil needs a lot of water, but doesn't like it too wet. It is best to let the soil dry out a bit before watering again . It needs a lot of sun and a warm, sheltered spot where the temperature doesn't fall below 12 degrees. The soil must be rich in nutrients and it is best to fertilize it every two to four weeks. When buying, be sure to choose a quality plant , as the cheaper ones are mass-produced quickly and will die off immediately at home, no matter how well you take care of them. It is possible to overwinter basil, but most plants will die.
