The legumes (Fabaceae) may have come to Europe from the Andes, the exact origin is disputed. Peas and beans are related but are not the same. Peas refer to the seed of the Pisum sativum plant . Beans belong to many genera and varieties and the term refers to the pod and seed . The best known are the kidney bean ( Phaseolus vulgaris ) and runner bean ( Phaseolus coccineus ) . A distinction is made between bush beans and runner beans , with the latter needing climbing aids to grow, just like peas . From April, beans and peas can be sown in the bed , but the legumes can also be cultivated in a pot on the balcony . Prefer in the house is possible. The plants are suitable for beginners because they are considered to be quite robust and do not need much water . The climbing varieties can grow up to 2 meters high in a very short time and are ready to harvest after 3 months.
