Physalis (Physalis peruviana ) belongs to the nightshade family ( Solanaceae ) and originally comes from the Andes and is therefore also called Andean berry. The subspecies Chinese lantern (Physalis alkekengi ) is also widespread in Europe , but it is disputed whether the fruits are edible, which is why we advise against it. T he physalis grows as a herbaceous shrub and can grow up to 1.5 meters high , its berries are yellow to orange and grow in a protective lantern. As soon as the fruit is ripe, the lantern dries and bursts open, revealing the edible fruit . This usually happens from August. The sepals are also often used for decorative purposes . Physalis should be sowed indoors , because the warm-loving plant should only be planted outdoors from mid - May . Physalis needs a lot of water, but has hardly any demands on the soil. The plant also grows very well in a pot , but needs a climbing aid from a certain height in the bed and in the pot. Only the fruits of the Andean berry are edible, the remaining parts of the plant are poisonous.
