The radish ( Raphanus sativus ) belongs to the cruciferous family . It develops a thick tuber underground that tastes slightly pungent. In normal radishes , this tuber is red, although nowadays there are different breeds that have other colors and shapes. The seeds are sown outdoors or in a pot from March . They prefer a sunny to partially shaded location. The soil should be kept evenly moist. Radishes grow very quickly and can be harvested after 4-6 weeks. It is best to sow new ones every few weeks in order to have fresh radishes available all year round .
