The currant ( Ribes ) includes many different varieties. The best known are the black ( Ribes nigrum ) and red ( Ribes rubrum ) currants . They differ not only in the color of the fruit, but also in taste. The black currant has a somewhat firmer skin and tastes sweeter and more aromatic than the red one . The red is a bit more sour, but still sweet. In terms of location requirements, the two are the same. They thrive best in sunny, partially shaded, nutrient-rich soil. Cultivation in a bucket on the balcony is also possible. In winter, currants are not very demanding. They are hardy and cope well with frost.
