The melons, which come from Africa , belong to the pumpkin family ( Cucurbitaceae ) and are therefore actually fruit vegetables . It is classified between watermelon ( Citrullus lanatus ) and cantaloupe ( Cucumis melo ) distinguished . Seeds can be started indoors from April but using young plants is recommended as they are more hardy than homegrown plants . From mid-May, the plants can go outside in the pot or in the bed. Since the plant is very climbing, it needs a lot of space. Cup-shaped flowers develop from June. Around 4 to 8 melons per plant can be harvested from August to September . Melons need a lot of water, nutrient-rich soil and like it warm and sunny.
