The onion ( Allium cepa ) belongs to the leek family and can no longer be thought of as part of our kitchen. It does not make high demands in terms of care and can be stored very well throughout the winter. There are different ways to plant them. The best known is about onion sets, which can be planted directly outdoors from the end of March . Another option would be to sow seeds, but this is usually not as productive as with onion sets. The site should have loose, loamy soil. Onions do not have to be watered extra throughout the year , as they also stand up well to longer periods of drought. From July, when the stalks begin to turn yellow and dry up, the bulbs are ready to be harvested. Let the onions dry and store in a cool, dry place.
