Plants on the windowsill: The perfect green privacy screen

Pflanzen auf der Fensterbank: Der perfekte grüne Sichtschutz - FARBIO® - Nachhaltige Bio-Flüssigdünger aus Hamburg

Whether the apartment is on the ground floor, is easy for the neighbors to look into or the window simply should not be completely free: It does not always have to be a curtain or a privacy film, because indoor plants can be used optimally as privacy protection at the window.

But a window is not just a window. A south-facing window gets a lot of sunlight, while a north-facing window tends to be less sunny. East and west windows have no direct midday light, but still let in enough sunlight. When selecting the plants that are to serve as privacy screens directly on the window, it is important to know in which direction the window is facing and what light needs the plants have.

Which plant can stand by the sunny window?

With a sunny window, it is particularly important to choose a plant that can tolerate this high level of sunlight, otherwise the plant can quickly become sunburned. A Strelitzia (Strelitzia reginae) is suitable for a south-facing window with full sun. But cacti also get along very well with full sun, which is why large specimens such as the spurge cactus (Euphorbia trigona) can protect them from looks. The Monkey's Tail cactus (Cleistocactus colademononis) makes a wonderful hanging privacy screen for a window that gets a lot of sunlight.

Little light: which plant for dark windows?

The single leaf (Spathiphyllum) and the nest fern (Asplenium nidus) feel particularly comfortable with a dark north window. But hanging plants can also serve as privacy screens, the ivy (Epipremnum aureum) has no problem with a shady place.

Ivy and bow hemp on the windowsill
The green lily (Chlorophytum comosum) and the sheet hemp (Sansevieria) can be found in almost any location. If they stand in front of a bright, light-flooded window, they become brighter. If these are in a shady location, they become dark green. Since the bow hemp grows densely in height, it is particularly suitable as a privacy screen.

Semi-shady location for plants: east and west windows

The east and west windows provide a partially shaded location for houseplants, ideal for a Monstera (Monstera deliciosa). In the mature stage, the large leaves offer a lot of privacy. The lucky feather (Zamioculcas) also grows tall and can stand well in the partially shaded window.

Plants on the windowsill

What should be considered with plants on the windowsill?

If you have plants by the window, you have to consider that in the cold season the heaters underneath are often on and the air dries out. This is not good for plants, so a humidifier should be used or the leaves of the plant sprayed with a fine mist. Our glass spray bottles are perfect for regularly spraying your plants with water, fertilizer or other care products. The bottles are made from recycled amber glass and have a trendy design. It should also be noted that some plants are sensitive to cool drafts. When airing in winter, the plants should be somewhere else for a short time.

If there are plants by the window, they often do not grow upwards, but towards the sun. This happens because only one side of the plant is constantly exposed to the sun. Auxins, so-called plant hormones, migrate within the plant to the shady side of the shoot axis, where the plant hormones gibberellins are activated there and ensure growth in length. This is how the plant bends towards the sun. For this reason, plants that stand by the window must be rotated regularly.

How do plants grow particularly fast?

Your windowsill plants can grow faster in a number of ways. In addition to the right location with the ideal lighting conditions, an adequate supply is also essential. Houseplants need nutrients to grow. Therefore, use a suitable fertilizer regularly to promote growth. The FARBIO® organic liquid fertilizers support you in caring for your plants with important main and micronutrient complexes!
