The philodendron from South America belongs to the arum family (Araceae). There are hundreds of types. The climbing philodendron (Philodendron scandens) is also known as the tree friend because it twines around and climbs trees in the tropics. A climbing pole is therefore required for growing at home. The tree philodendron (Philodendron bipinnatifidum) grows as a ground plant. The leaves vary depending on the subspecies and are heart- or arrow-shaped, some have spikes. It grows about 1.5 meters high. The creeping philodendron (Philodendron gloriosum) is characterized by the large heart-shaped leaves with light-colored veins and a velvety feel. Its roots are spreading. Some subspecies of philodendron have variegation. Philodendron likes it moist, warm and prefers a soil substrate with a high proportion of peat moss, coarse sand and expanded clay. The philodendron is poisonous to humans and pets.
